There are destinations that immediately present themselves. Others that reveal themselves slowly, through encounters, light, and silence.
A few days earlier, Marrakech I was captivated by its energy. A vibrant, teeming, almost dizzying city. Then the north of Morocco appeared as its perfect counterpoint. More secretive. More contemplative. More Mediterranean.
Barely out of Tangier airport, a familiar feeling washes over me. A feeling of almost Andalusian gentleness, where European and Moroccan influences converse with astonishing harmony. Here, whitewashed facades echo colorful doors, cafes overlook the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Mediterranean seems to set the rhythm of daily life with infinite serenity.
Long overlooked by major tourist routes, northern Morocco still cultivates a certain seclusion. This precious authenticity now appeals to travelers seeking more sensitive, more refined experiences, far removed from clichés.
Just an hour and a half's drive from Tangier, the Banyan Tree Tamouda Bay prolongs this feeling of escape. Nestled between the Rif mountains and the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, this exceptional hotel perfectly embodies this other vision of Morocco: refined, peaceful and deeply connected to nature.
For a few days, we explored this still little-known region. An invitation to slow down, to contemplate, and to rediscover travel in its most essential form.
Why choose northern Morocco?
While Marrakech naturally attracts all the attention, northern Morocco has a very different personality.
The proximity to Spain, the Andalusian influences, the constant presence of the Mediterranean, and a particularly mild climate offer a much more peaceful experience. The cities have retained a unique identity where Arab-Andalusian heritage, colonial architecture, and the Mediterranean way of life blend together.
It is also an ideal destination for extending a stay of a few days or organizing a romantic getaway less than two hours' flight from France.

I had no particular expectations when I arrived in Tangier.
This probably explains the intensity of this infatuation.
Rather than visiting the city alone, we had the privilege of being guided by Jean-Olivier Arfeuillère, owner of the legendary DAR NOURDiscovering a city through the eyes of its inhabitants profoundly changes the way we see it.
The Kasbah then reveals all its poetry.
The narrow streets unfold one after another, the terraces open onto the sea, the ancient doors tell of several centuries of history while the scents of spices, jasmine and orange blossom accompany each step.
Contrary to popular belief, Tangier never tries to impress. It seduces with subtlety. Its elegance lies precisely in this preserved authenticity, in the details that one only notices when one takes the time to stop and appreciate them.
It's not a city you visit. It's a city you live in, for a few days.

Banyan Tree Tamouda Bay, a refuge between sea and mountains
Some hotels impress with their extravagance. Others opt for restraint. The Banyan Tree Tamouda Bay undoubtedly belongs to this second category.
Upon arrival, the pace slows. Mediterranean gardens stretch down to the sea, dotted with centuries-old olive trees, vibrant bougainvillea, and palm trees swaying in the breeze. The architecture, inspired by Andalusian palaces and Moorish art, plays with light without ever succumbing to ostentation. Here, everything seems designed to let nature speak for itself.
Opened in 2016, this establishment was the first Banyan Tree hotel in Morocco. More than just a luxury address, it embodies a certain idea of travel: one where space, silence, and time regained become true privileges.
Facing the Mediterranean, every vista invites contemplation. Shaded patios follow stone pools, walkways open onto fragrant gardens, while blue tile roofs subtly recall the region's Andalusian heritage.
It quickly becomes clear why so many travelers choose to almost never leave the estate.

If the Banyan Tree experience had to be summed up in one word, it would probably be intimacy.
There are no traditional rooms here.
The 92 accommodations take the form of spacious, independent villas, each hidden behind high whitewashed walls. Once through the gate, you discover a true private haven where your gaze wanders between patios, shaded terraces and the heated swimming pool.
The interior naturally prolongs this feeling of calm.
Raw materials interact with sculpted wood, natural textiles soften the volumes, and large openings let in changing light throughout the day.

As is often the case at Banyan Tree, the cuisine plays a vital role in the experience.
Each restaurant tells a different story, while showcasing local produce.
Our favorite, without hesitation, is... SaffronThe group's signature address. In a setting delicately lit at dusk, Thai cuisine reveals its full finesse. The spices are perfectly balanced, the cooking is precise, and each dish is a true sensory journey.
A few steps away, Tingitana Meanwhile, it celebrates Mediterranean and Levantine influences. Freshly caught fish, seasonal vegetables and aromatic herbs make up a generous cuisine that naturally echoes the surrounding landscape.
During the day, Azura Beach Club prolong this interlude facing the sea. Lunches are often enjoyed there, with grilled fish, seafood and long conversations lulled by the sound of the waves.

The Banyan Tree spa, the art of letting go
If there is one place that sums up the Banyan Tree philosophy, it is its spa.
Since its creation in Thailand, the brand has built its reputation around a holistic approach to well-being where each treatment seeks more to rebalance than simply to relax.
In Tamouda Bay, this promise takes on its full meaning.
The six treatment rooms are arranged around a thermal circuit combining hammam, vitality pool, relaxation areas and pavilions opening onto the gardens.

The massage I received there remains one of the most beautiful memories of this trip. Every movement is precise, deeply respectful of each person's rhythm. Nothing is demonstrative. Everything simply invites you to slow down.

Chefchaouen, the blue brilliance of the Rif
About a hundred kilometers from Tamouda Bay, a winding road crosses the Rif mountains before revealing one of the most photographed cities in Morocco.

For a long time, its maze of alleyways, entirely painted blue, has fueled the imagination of travelers. Yet, behind the now iconic images, the city retains a profoundly peaceful atmosphere, especially when one chooses to discover it outside of the high season.
From the early hours of the day, shutters slowly open, artisans set up their stalls, and residents reclaim the still-silent alleyways. The blue changes at every turn. Sometimes pastel, sometimes indigo, occasionally almost white under the midday sun.
Here, time seems to stand still.
We linger in a shaded square, share mint tea on a terrace, and watch children laughing as they cross the medina. More than just a backdrop, Chefchaouen is a city that invites you to slow down.
One piece of advice, though: avoid the summer months. The magic of the place lies precisely in this tranquility, which disappears when the streets fill with visitors.
Northern Morocco, an ideal destination for a private wedding
Over the years, we have discovered many destinations designed for destination weddings.
Puglia, Menorca, Lake Como, Portugal and Marrakech are among the most sought-after destinations.
Northern Morocco, however, fully deserves its place in this selection.
Less frequented, more secluded and surprisingly accessible from France, this region offers a rare balance between Mediterranean landscapes, historical heritage and exceptional hotels.
For couples who dream of a destination wedding without sacrificing the comfort of their guests, Tamouda Bay is a particularly attractive alternative.

Perhaps because it hasn't yet succumbed to the trappings of mass tourism. Perhaps because its beauty is revealed with restraint, far from spectacular displays. Or simply because this region has managed to preserve what today constitutes the greatest treasure of travel: time.
Time for a coffee overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. Time for a stroll through the quiet alleyways of Tangier. Time for a massage at the Banyan Tree or a sunset over the Mediterranean.
We left with the feeling of having discovered a profoundly different Morocco. More intimate. More Mediterranean. More peaceful.
