Destination Puglia

Discover Puglia was a long-standing dream. Beyond the imagination I had nurtured for so many years, I was far from imagining how much the encounter would upset me. Some places have the taste of escape while provoking the impression of being at home. This is the feeling I had. An invitation to laziness and appeasement. The disconnection was total.

From these Mediterranean landscapes, I will keep in mind this red earth populated with olive trees, these white houses as far as the eye can see, these cliffs plunging into the turquoise waters, the kindness and enthusiasm of the Italians despite the health crisis.

I'll take you on my journey. Journey, journey.

Traveling to Italy: Administrative procedures before leaving

• To be in possession of a valid ID (passport or ID).
• Bring your European Health Insurance Card to ask your social security center, a few weeks before your departure. In the event of a problem, your medical expenses would be covered, as well as your repatriation.

When to go to Puglia?

We left at the end of July and it was very hot. Some days exceeded 43 degrees. Living in the south, we are used to this Mediterranean climate and have adapted our outing times. We left in the morning to visit the surrounding villages, in the afternoon, we lazed between naps and swimming pool and we went out again in the evening (#ornot). Renting an air-conditioned house with a swimming pool was a real comfort.

If you want to go backpacking, I recommend you go in spring or fall to enjoy the summer temperatures without the extreme heat of summer. December can also be a great option.

We were less keen on the Salento coast because of the crowds. If you go in the summer, rent a boat to enjoy the seaside without playing beach sardine.

Puglia: Where to Sleep?

We booked for 7 nights a typical local house in the countryside surrounding Ostuni: Borgo Silentio. Valentina and Luca welcomed us with the greatest care. The place is quite magical, I can only recommend it.

Things to know about Puglia

• The spoken language is Italian. With English you will be able to make yourself understood without any problem and otherwise, it is well known that Italians speak with their hands :)
• European country, the currency used is the Euro
• Since 2013, the olive plague or so-called Xylella Fastidiosa is raging in Salento. Millions of olive trees have been ravaged by this bacteria. And unfortunately there is nothing to do except replant a more robust variety.
