Winter wedding in Japan

When love crosses borders, the result is unique and inspiring stories. Such is the case of Julien and Yuka, a French-Japanese couple who elegantly and harmoniously blended their cultures during their wedding. From their meeting at a company in Hokkaido to their marriage proposal on the beaches of Biarritz, their journey is a true journey between two worlds.

To celebrate their union, they chose to pay homage to their roots by holding two separate ceremonies, one in Japan, in the purest Shinto tradition, and the other in France. Discover the details of their poetic and refined wedding, where every element—from the outfits to the decorations—testifies to the perfect blend of modernity and tradition.

Poetically illustrated by the images of their photographer Amélie Labarthe Photography, testimony to a celebration with an Asian flavor.

The initial meeting

An office romance! I was working at a company in Hokkaido when Yuka was recruited to the same team right out of college.

The marriage proposal

In front of the ocean, in Biarritz, during a trip to France.

Wedding in Japan

Since we are a Franco-Japanese couple, we had the idea of celebrating our wedding in both countries. In Japan, we chose a ceremony and reception in the Japanese tradition, first at Hokkaido Jingu, the oldest Shinto shrine in Hokkaido, and then at Elm Garden, a traditional Japanese restaurant that offers turnkey wedding planning solutions.

Wedding planning

We started thinking about a year in advance, guided by the workbook prepared by Elm Garden. We then produced the program, videos, soundtrack, etc. ourselves.

Wedding decoration

We opted for a natural ambiance, based on wood, green and brown colors with slight yellow and blue accents. The stationery was entirely created by Yuka, who let her designer soul shine through. As for the flowers, they were suggested by the florist at Elm Garden based on our color choices and the season.

The bride and groom's outfits

A Japanese wedding calls for a kimono! The shiromuku (the bride's white kimono) was a must-have for Yuka, with gold accents in the accessories. For Julien, we chose a montsukihakama (the groom's kimono), avoiding the traditional navy blue and opting for bright colors like white and gold..

We had planned a change of outfit for the reception, to mark a new highlight in the festivities, with a "second entrance": a white evening dress enhanced with purple accents for Yuka and a 3-piece silver-grey suit for Julien.

Their most moving memory

For Yuka: a song sung by her little brother, accompanied on the guitar by her father, which brought tears to the eyes of all the guests.

For Julien: Yuka's entrance, arm in arm with her father, to the music of "What A Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.

Their best choice in wedding planning

Let's face it: planning a wedding is a lot of work. By choosing Elm Garden, we ended the big day with a sumptuous meal in an enchanting setting – in short, the perfect reward!

Advice from the newlyweds

Plan ahead – but not too far! You need to give yourself time to think without giving yourself too much time to change your mind, to avoid unnecessary hesitation.

And very important: communication! Especially for an international couple like ours. Cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings about what is considered "normal" in a wedding. Talk about it, share, and don't assume that this or that is "obvious." The more you communicate, the more you'll anticipate potential problems, and the less frustration you'll accumulate before the big day!
