Wedding on the island of Djerba in Tunisia

Destination Wedding in Djerba: a marriage between two cultures under the Tunisian sun

There are places that are not only beautiful — they carry souls, memories, roots. Djerba, the island of a thousand lights, saw the birth of a promise of love celebrated between golden sand, oriental traditions and raw emotions. It is here, lulled by the warmth of the South and the murmurs of the Mediterranean, that Maïssen and Valérian chose to unite, surrounded by those who are dear to them.

In this touching interview, they tell us their story, their choices, their emotions... and the behind-the-scenes of a wedding like no other.

The initial meeting

We met at our workplace in July 2022! We started out as friends until we finally fell in love a year later.

So we started our relationship like this: lovers and colleagues and this for 1 year :)

The marriage proposal

In July 2023, he came to join me in Djerba, the island where my father was born. It was important to me that he discover my second culture, my origins, and part of my family. It went wonderfully well!

On our return, we spent a few days in the Arcachon basin.

One Friday, he took me to the Banc d'Arguin where, against all odds, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! It was a powerful and moving moment that we will never forget!

Wedding on the island of Djerba

As soon as the school year started, we started visiting wedding venues in the Île-de-France region since that's where we live. But we quickly faced the fact that the number of guests meant we couldn't stick to our budget, that the venues we liked were no longer available or were available during months when bad weather was likely, and above all, the difficulty of coordinating the various parties involved meant we had to take a wedding planner and therefore exceed our budget even more.

Wedding planning

For us, it was important at least to have good weather. So I started to find out what was happening in Djerba (since I'm originally from there) without wanting a typically traditional wedding: I really wanted something that brought together the two cultures, a wedding that showed the beauty of each of them.

I came across Louisa, a wedding planner on the island of Djerba, and I fell in love with her work: it was everything I was looking for!

I spoke to Valérian about it and so we met him in November 2023 during our visit to Tunisia! Following this meeting, we embarked on this crazy adventure! We set the date for July 20, 2024, it was December: we had to notify all our loved ones quickly so that they would be part of it!

Wedding decoration

We wanted something very natural, where the flora remained in its original state, and at the same time I wanted oriental notes in the play of light, some spaces and above all, in the animation.

So we went with white and green colors, oriental lighting, an oriental corner, and tables decorated with sand roses etc.

In terms of entertainment: a folk troupe, oud, etc.

Finally, from Paris, we made white, brown and green invitations with palm trees to announce the wedding theme.

The bride and groom's outfits

The bride's outfit

For my part, I had already selected my dress before having the venue: I had had a magical dress in mind for a long time.

Finally, I wanted to change for 30 minutes during the "folkloric troupe" entertainment in order to wear a traditional outfit. So I tried on some clothes in Djerba and fell in love with a light-colored fouta with beaded ornaments :)

The groom's outfit

Valerian wanted him a comfortable, sand-colored suit he could wear to party all night. I advised him to wear dark brown shoes to create a contrast, and that's what he did.

Their most moving memory

For us, ceremony remains the most moving moment as well as our first dance ! It was everything we expected!

Their best choice in wedding planning

We are happy to have insisted on accentuating the oriental touch: many of our guests liked it and Louisa accompanied us very well so as not to fall into excess either!

Advice from the newlyweds

Our advice to future brides and grooms: follow your instincts and be accompanied by someone who truly wants the best for you and understands your desires! It was a relief to know that we could rely on Louisa while we were apart. It's a relief for the soul and it allowed us to truly enjoy every moment. 🥰
