We love his impertinence, his attention to detail and his ultra sensitivity. For 7 years, Nicolas Lucas professional wedding photographer in PICOLA is our partner faithful and discreet.

From his 20 years in wedding photography, Nicolas Lucas vibrates to the sandstone of his sensitivity. He takes a unique and authentic look at each of his couples. PICOLA dives into real life and brings back only the vivid emotions. His beauty is the human. A look, a tear, an embrace. Each image takes you on a new journey that whispers a beautiful story to you.

But who is really behind the PICOLA camera?

Today for Madame C's blog, NICOLAS LUCAS testifies…

PICOLA

Wedding photographer

His history

Oh my story! It's about a doctor of science with a thwarted vocation who had never touched a camera before he was 25 and who, if he could have chosen, would have preferred to draw people! But drawing is a bit long, so...

wedding photography

A couple of friends asked me to take their wedding photo almost 20 years ago. I had never taken a photo, but they apparently knew better than me what it would give. Visionaries it seems!!

Her experience

After this first event photographed in 2007, I moved on very quickly and photographed my first wedding internationally in 2009. At that time, my clientele was as much from New York as it was from France. At the same time, I started working in the cinema in the United States as a director of photography. Since then, I have photographed 30 to 40 weddings per year and this gives a total of more than 500 weddings covered in more than 10 different countries.

“My photo is like a drawing I would have done in kindergarten.
and that I would give to Mom when I left school.
She would tell me "that's good" and I would hear "that's good and I love you"
I seek love from all… pathetic? Maybe, but I don't care »

Style

The style is chic and rock, it is impertinent but soft and surrounding. Without doing any barroom psychology, I sincerely think that the generations I photograph grew up with Instagram, so I want to offer them these photos that they saw in dreams, without thinking they could access them. And I give this "to real people". I do not post or highlight any editorial photos or "staged" collaborations. I only place photos of real couples, I like to make the following dream with these real moments and my relationship is always intimate with the couples with whom I keep strong ties.... Hey! 50 reviews posted on your blog I think, a record, right?

His inspiration

In music for sure. For each event, after talking with the couples, I choose a "hymn" and this song lulls me throughout the day... I can listen to it 200 times before and sometimes I listen to it again during the day during the journeys for example. And then of course, there is this hypersensitive side, but be careful... the real hypersensitivity, the one that pricks you with a needle a thousand times a day and that leads me to make a thousand transfers each time I take a photo, whether it is of a child or a parent.

His take on wedding photography

This is a vast subject and I'm not going to start debunking everything! Let's say that the strong fashion effect in this industry invites most photographers to a real standardization of the result and that I find that very sad... filters, how horrible, fashion effects, what a shame when they are outdated... Today I have more than 800 wedding photographers who are subscribed to my Instagram and many ask me these questions "how do you make a career on two continents? How do you take this photo technically? Etc. etc." I always answer politely, but frankly I have never asked myself the question and I have never placed a strategy... if you don't feel strongly and if you don't master me technically, well maybe it's better to do something else. I hope that most will understand that you have to move away from any sentimentality of the type "I will accompany you during your beautiful day etc."... chic, rock and impertinent, did we say no?

His best reporting memory

What a complicated question!! It's not a destination, nor a whole day but short moments that have blown me away. Without thinking, I think of a wedding in a fairly working-class environment more than 10 years ago where a very tired father of Polish origin who had carried his entire family on his arms was sitting, out of breath, in a corner of the dining room with tubes in his nose and a heavy oxygen bottle. It was late and when the time for the first dance rang, he stood up with all his strength, straight, and without letting anything show, he went to get his daughter and made her dance, bottle in one hand and his daughter in the other. I know that this photo of these two, nose to nose, accompanied the last moments of this father for his family some time later. I live for this, you have to understand, and I respect their moments infinitely.

His movements

I travel all over Europe and North America and even though I sometimes complain about crazy logistics, of course I like these challenges. What is crazy logistics? It's always booking 3 flights: if one is cancelled, there are 2 left. If another is late, there is 1 left…

His Mantra

I don't have any, I think?! And living often in New York where everyone speaks in idioms, I try to detach myself from it. However, if I had to choose and to return to the first, fundamental question, I would say that my photo is like a drawing that I would have done in kindergarten and that I would give to Mom when leaving school. She would tell me "that's good" and I would hear "that's good and I love you". I seek love from everyone... pathetic? Maybe, but I don't care.
